  • Steve Smith
    CEO, Principal

    With over 20 years of experience in urban development, construction and property management, Steve leads the Model Group as CEO.  In this position since 2001, Steve has been responsible for setting strategy and direction for the Model Group. After founding Model Property Development in 2001, Steve pioneered the 'Transformative Neighborhood Revitalization' strategies that have become the hallmark of the Model Group’s development philosophy and approach. Under Steve’s leadership, the Model Group has completed over $550 million in real estate development since 2001.

    Steve has also been a regional and statewide leader in the affordable housing industry in Ohio and Kentucky, pushing for a new affordable housing paradigm—one that sees affordable housing as both a high quality home for families and an economic stimulus to broader community revitalization. In fact, he personally hosted HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan in 2010 as the secretary looked for national models of successful housing development using federal NSP funds.

    Steve is past chair of the Ohio Housing Council, which helps shape affordable housing development policy in Ohio, and is a frequent speaker at such conferences as the Ohio Housing Conference, the Kentucky Housing Conference, the National Historic Preservation Summit, and the National Association for State and Local Equity Funds. He chaired the Permanent Supportive Housing committee of Cincinnati’s Homeless to Homes Plan. He is a graduate of Leadership Cincinnati, and a 2011 inductee into the Working in Neighborhoods Hall of Fame.

    Steve received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Kentucky University. He is married with three children.

  • Bobby Maly
    COO, Principal

    Bobby is responsible for directing The Model Group's daily operating activities. Prior to his role as COO, Bobby led Model Property Development. Working with key neighborhood development agencies and community partners, Bobby has taken a lead role in some of the largest recent urban revitalization projects in Greater Cincinnati, most notably in Over-the-Rhine and Walnut Hills. He has led over $550 million in real estate development and construction.  

    Bobby is very active in Ohio/Kentucky civic organizations, serving on the boards of Northern Kentucky Scholar House, the Ohio Housing Council and the City of Cincinnati's Community Development Advisory Board.  He is Past Chair of the Over-the-Rhine Chamber of Commerce.

    Bobby earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and holds a Master of Public Policy  from the University of Maryland. He lives in Cincinnati with his wife and two children.

  • Bob Keppler
    President of Construction

    Leading Model Construction, Bob brings over 26 years of commercial construction experience to the TMG leadership team. Bob is responsible for all project performance, staff, and the day to day operations for the construction division. He has led some of the largest, high profile projects in Cincinnati, such as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art, the Washington Park Revitalization, WCPO and WLWT broadcasting studios, and Crossroads Community Church.  Model Construction’s project team and partners benefit from Bob’s strong leadership based in experience, with a focus on our performance and partners.

    Bob serves as a Board Member of the Department of Inclusion Advisory and Accountability Board for the City of Cincinnati.

    Bob holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Bob is heavily involved in volunteering his time in youth sports.  He and his wife along with their three children reside in Harrison, Ohio.

  • DAVID THOMPSON
    Director of Development

    David Thompson joined the Model Group in 2005, became a project manager in 2006, a Development Manager in 2008, and Director of Development in 2012.  In his current position, David serves as the point person for Model Property Development’s affordable and multifamily development efforts in Ohio and Kentucky as well as the overseeing of Model’s project managers on all LIHTC deals.  David has a passion for socially responsible business practices with a particular focus on urban core revitalization and sustainability issues.  In his time at Model, David has been responsible for closing over $100 million in LIHTC developments. As the former National Program Director of Mission Year, a non-profit urban service and community development organization, David brings invaluable expertise to Housing Credit deals in which Model partners with neighborhood agencies.

    David holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Systems from Taylor University, a Masters degree in religion from Westminster Theological Seminary, an MBA from the University of Cincinnati, and is a LEED Accredited Professional. David lives in Norwood, Ohio with his wife and two children.

  • Tim Moning
    Director of Property Management

    Tim Moning is currently the Director of Property Management for Brickstone Properties, the management division of The Model Group in Cincinnati Ohio, having joined the company in 2007 as Operations Manager.  He brings over 30 years of experience in property management, with a concentration in affordable housing, to Brickstone Properties.  Tim’s extensive experience includes service as CEO of a diversified real estate company where he directed operations of the management, maintenance, manufacturing, investment and sales divisions, developed an in-depth understanding of employee benefits programs and workers compensation, and gained significant experience in managing affordable housing communities.  Tim’s work has forged strong ties with equity and banking partners, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority and the Covington Housing Authority.   As Director of Property Management, he oversees daily operations of a portfolio of 1500 units, has successfully managed over 2000 units, and has facilitated the expansion of management activities into Kentucky with the inclusion of over 100 units. 

    A Kentucky native, Mr. Moning earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Accounting and English from Thomas More College and a Master of Arts English degree from Murray State University, and has additional experience teaching at the university level at Thomas More College, The College of Mount St. Joseph, and Miami University.  Tim currently lives in Cleves, Ohio.

  • Art Reckman
    Founder, Principal

    Art founded the Model Group in 1978 with sweat equity and a modest savings account. Since the company’s inception, Art has created over ten estate partnerships, providing homes for over thousands of families, primarily in an urban environment. Art’s extensive construction and property development portfolio includes market rate and affordable housing apartments, condominiums, commercial space, retail space, and historic adaptive reuse housing. Art continues to set the standard for the company’s commitment to partnership, excellence and sincerity.

    Art has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from The University of Cincinnati. He is married with three children.
